Dati and the CNHI

Sometimes looking back over old notes and documents throws up surprises. The first time I glanced through the list of members of the CNHI’s ‘technical committee’ in the prefiguration stage (2003-4) none of the names meant anything to me (they were mostly advisers from the various ministries concerned). What a surprise then to see the then unknown name Rachida Dati [Wikipedia - English] leap out of the page (Rapport Toubon, p.127).

She sounds very interesting…what do you think of her? From the wikipedia article it sounds like a meteoric rise to such a position. And what about her brother being arrested for drug trafficking? With it all kicking off today with (my favourite headline) Wacky Baccy Jacqui and Alistair Darling both self confessed inveterate potheads (is it a ’smoke’screen for something they’re pushing through today I always wonder when politicians declare of their own accord salacious titbits of gossip about themselves)…drugs and politics seem a match made in heaven.

You’re right – she’s certainly a very determined lady. I actually quite like the fact that in France the drug thing hasn’t been picked up that much – it’s not her, after all – and it maybe gives her a bit more credibility to talk about the related law and order issues. As for the UK, surely it’s all to prepare another regrading of cannabis using the ‘yes-we’ve-all-been-there-but-it-wasn’t-like-it-is-today’ line. I think I’m right in thinking penalties for possession of skunk are already tougher than for weed so I don’t really see what the problem with current policy is.
