I came across your blog while trying (unsuccessfully) to find an article I read around 20 years ago (when I was an exchange student at the ENS) on the history of museums and the development of democracy. Since you are an expert in the field, you may know the article, and if so I would be extremely grateful if you could send me the reference. All I remember is that it was in the Annales (EHESS) (to which at present I unfortunately have no access), and I believe the author was a woman, but I don’t remember her name. It would have been during the years 1990-92, probably in 1991 or 1992. It was a fascinating article, and explained how museums, in the wake of the Revolution, first allowed people to share their inner worlds, etc. She dwelt, in part, on the symbolism involved in opening the Louvre to the public as a museum.
